Westfield

  WESTFIELD MARKET REPORT

Settled nearly three hundred years ago, Westfield offers its residents a vibrant downtown, convenient access to Manhattan, award-winning schools, and year-round recreational activities. Spanning a little over 6.7 square miles, Westfield is known for its tree-lined streets and quaint Victorian architecture as well as charming colonials, tudors and cape cods and new construction as well. The last census placed Westfield’s population at approximately 30,000 residents.

Mainly a residential community, Westfield’s downtown is home to both national retailers and locally-owned businesses alike. The independent bookstore, classic arcade, family-owned pharmacies, and summer farmers’ market contribute to a small-town feel. Restaurant offerings range from destination Italian restaurants and bakeries to an award-winning French restaurant and most everything in between, including our own brewery. Many of the town’s eateries and coffee shops offer outdoor seating during the warmer months. A highlight of the summer in Westfield is the Sweet Sounds Music Festival which offers live music on Tuesday evenings at several locations downtown. Residents and visitors can be found enjoying a picnic dinner or strolling through the streets of Westfield listening to jazz, country, blues and rock & roll bands. Westfield is also home to a community theater, a town orchestra, and a community band that performs a summer concert series.

Located about 24 miles west of Manhattan, Westfield is serviced by both New Jersey Transit buses and trains, or is a short 40-minute drive. Peak train service to New York requires a quick connection in Newark; a one-seat ride program offers many non-peak direct trains from Westfield to New York’s Penn Station.

There are ten public schools in Westfield. There is a centralized kindergarten school, six neighborhood elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Children and adults of all ages can be found playing sports year-round at beautiful 106-acreTamaques Park. Picturesque walking trails that border small lakes can be found at Lenape and Brightwood Parks. While many residents belong to the outdoor Westfield Memorial Pool, there are also private swim, golf, and tennis clubs available. In the colder months, a seasonal ice-skating rink opens at Gumbert Park.

Westfield is a town that is proud of its past. It was once a trail popular with the Lenni-Lenape Indians whose heritage is reflected in the names of Mindowaskin, Lenape, and Tamaques Parks. The Westfield Historical Society operates a cultural center as well as a museum to preserve the town’s history through educational programs and community outreach. Westfield was home to Charles Addams, creator of the Addams Family. In October, Westfield celebrates this famous resident with a month-long AddamsFest featuring a masquerade ball, film screenings, a beer garden, historical lectures, and children’s activities.

New Jersey Monthly Magazine ranks Westfield in the Top 50 “Best Place to Live in New Jersey” in September 2019.
